Hanauma Bay Open Again After Water Outage

The staff at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will be evaluating the program period to determine sustainability of the modified operations now that it is resuming regular operations following the two-week pilot program and an abrupt closure Sunday resulting from the water outage.

This includes resumption of the free, no-reservation-required access for Hawai‘i residents the first hour the nature preserve is open to the public, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Active duty military (and their dependents) must have valid Hawai‘i identification to take advantage of this opening non-reservation privilege, but will still receive free entry into the nature preserve with their military identification.

All other public entry into the nature preserve, including access for non-Hawai‘i residents, will require a reservation using the Parks and Recreation Online System: https://pros4.hnl.info/hanauma-bay

Reservations become available online at 7 a.m. (HST) two days prior. Approximately 25-percent of the nature preserve entries will be left available for walk-in/drive-in visitors who do not have a reservation regardless of residency.

Parks and Recreation staff are continuing to evaluate the impact this pilot program had on the preserve’s facilities, natural environment, staffing, and surrounding community to determine whether the change in operations are sustainable.

Hanauma Bay is a fiscally responsible nature preserve which supports a thriving ecosystem and living laboratory. These attributes provide exceptional first-hand, interactive marine life conservation experiences that perpetuate the protection of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve’s historical, cultural, and natural resources for this and future generations.
