Fairmont Kea Lani offers resort guests reef-safe sunscreen

Fairmont Kea Lani, Hawai’i’s only all-suite and villa luxury resort, has partnered with a local skincare company, Kuleana®, becoming the first Hawai‘i resort to offer its guests the new, locally sourced, all natural reef-safe sunscreen in complimentary beach and poolside dispensers. This recent step taken by Fairmont Kea Lani furthers its dedication to responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

“We are thrilled to offer industry leading sunscreen designed to malama `aina, mai i uka a ke kai (take care of the land, from mountain to sea) as well as protect our guests while enjoying Maui’s abundant outdoor recreations,” explains Michael Pye, Fairmont Kea Lani’s general manager.  “Fairmont Kea Lani’s commitment to social responsibility is woven into the fabric of our company culture.  With this new partnership, we celebrate the blooming sunflower fields and tropical coastlines of Maui.  We are proud to share these natural wonders and the sustainable products Kuleana offers with our guests,” continues Pye.

Kuleana’s “farm to face” natural beauty products are made with locally grown ingredients including Hawaiian macadamia nut and Maui sunflower oils, two skin nourishing emollients. The oils are cruelty-free, vegan, GMO-free and contain no synthetic fragrances or colors. Made with an innovative clear zinc oxide, the new reef-friendly Kuleana SPF 30 Sunscreen does not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate – two ingredients considered to be harmful to ocean reefs.  Kuleana Sunscreen also supports environmental nonprofits in Hawai‘i through its membership in the global organization, 1% for the Planet.

“We are honored to partner with Fairmont Kea Lani as they share our same commitment and sense of kuleana – or responsibility – to practice sustainability and care for our island’s natural resources and our community,” said Joy Galatro, Kuleana marketing director.

On Friday, November 16, Fairmont Kea Lani will debut the environmentally focused sunscreen to resort guests with a daylong celebration. On property, guests can enjoy informational and engaging activities highlighting Kuleana Sunscreen, including product demonstrations, ‘sunflower selfie’ photo opportunities and door prizes. Additionally, a special Willow Stream Spa party in recognition of national healthy skin month will be hosted between 2pm – 4pm with product demonstrations of the sunscreen and the full Kuleana natural skincare system of beauty oils and cleansers now offered at the Spa; the public is invited to join the celebration.

Fairmont Kea Lani is committed to responsible tourism practices and sustainable hotel management. Created in 2001, Fairmont Kea Lani’s Planet 21 Sustainability Team is comprised of leaders and colleagues dedicated to proactively “greening” operations and cultivating an enduring connection to the land and community.  To date, the Sustainability Team has launched over 50 environmental initiatives at the resort.
