19th COVID-related death, 29 new coronavirus cases reported in Hawaii
Hawaii Health Department announces that COVID-19-related death toll in the state hit 19 today.
An elderly Oahu woman, whose exact age was not released, who was hospitalized for “quite a while” with multiple underlying health issues has died, State of Hawaii Health Director Bruce Anderson said.
Anderson said, “As the state continues to reopen businesses and rebuild the economy, controlling the spread of COVID-19 will be the key to moving forward. Controlling the spread of the virus requires everyone to wear a face covering whenever they are out and avoid crowded places, closed spaces, and close contact with those outside of their household.”
Of the state’s 19 coronavirus deaths, 13 have been on Oahu and six on Maui.
The news comes as Hawaii continues to see worrying double-digit increases in new infections.
Hawaii reported 29 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total for cases to 975 and triggered concern among state health officials. It’s the highest single-day surge since April 4.
There were 25 new cases on Oahu, two on Maui, one on Hawaii island, and one case is a Hawaii resident who was diagnosed out of state.
At least five of the cases are linked to three gatherings and possible clusters, Anderson said.
