A Haircut in Honolulu Followed by Dinner in Waikiki? Get Ready!

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced that a haircut in Honolulu may be possible again this Friday, restaurants may open June 5, and gyms and most other offices may follow June 19.

Oahu will follow CDC guidelines as well as guidelines established by the National Restaurant Association.

There will be a new normal.

We are where we are because of the people. Citizens of Hawaii did everything they were asked to do, and the curve is flattened on Oahu and the rest of the state. People here in this part of the world are special.

Opening bars, nightclubs, and mass venues like Blaisdell Arena and Aloha Stadium may have to wait a little longer, but it will happen soon.

When asked about a drop in voters’ perception of the mayor’s performance, Caldwell said not many decisions he had to make were popular decisions. But they were decisions he made to protect the people of this island, and they were never made to win a popularity contest.

The two-week quarantine for passengers flying interisland may no longer be necessary assuming there are no more than 3 cases of new COVID-19 infections.

eTN Publisher Juergen Steinmetz – who is also leading rebuilding.travel – asked if the Mayor would agree with him to wait 2 weeks and watch what opening the tourism industry will do for Florida or California, and wait 2 weeks on what the opening of our state will do to the spread of the virus. The mayor agreed and said his response is YES.

Rebuilding.travel has been working with regions around the world to establish travel bubbles and corona-resilient zones. According to Mayor Caldwell, such an approach is being discussed also for Hawaii.

The Mayor mentioned a start could be opening up flights to New Zealand and Australia where coronavirus infections are low, followed by South Korea and Japan.

Safety for Hawaii’s residents is always first when making such decisions, and openings will have restrictions and safety guidelines associated with them.
