Honolulu Mayor warns about Omicron surge
Yesterday’s data from the Hawai‘i Department of Health revealed 797 new COVID-19 cases reported, with 712 of them on O‘ahu. The 7-day average for O‘ahu is now 251 with a positivity rate of 5.4%. As of this morning, there were 32 COVID patients in O‘ahu hospitals.
The following statements are attributable to Mayor Rick Blangiardi in response to the new data.
“It appears the COVID fight is shifting to Omicron and we have been advised case counts are likely to surge again. We continue to monitor conditions very closely and consult with our medical experts. We remain hopeful Omicron symptoms are mild and do not lead to more severe cases requiring hospitalization.
As of today on O‘ahu, 81.6% of eligible people are fully vaccinated, 87.1% have initiated vaccination, and 22% or 220,484 people have received a booster. Impressive numbers, however we are urging everyone who is eligible to get the booster shot as soon as possible to best protect themselves against the threat of Omicron.
We have learned much about fighting this disease during the past two years and we know getting the booster, vaccinating eligible keiki, wearing your mask indoors and especially in crowded settings, and staying home when you are sick are our best opportunities to fight this surge.
The pandemic has been extremely challenging and exhausting for all of us. That said, we want everyone to have a safe and joyous holiday season, however please remember to take precautions if you are gathering with friends and your loved ones.”
