Monkeypod tree uprooting at Kunawai Springs Urban Park on Oahu

Following heavy rain and strong winds this week, a 60-foot tall Monkeypod tree at Kunawai Springs Urban Park with a branch span almost double its height has started to uproot. This is creating an increased risk of structural failure and ultimately poses a safety hazard to park users and nearby residents.

The immediate removal of the tree at the edge of Kunawai Springs Urban Park is required after arborists with the Honolulu Division of Urban Forestry (DUF) observed the continued uprooting of the large tree.

Currently DUF arborists are working with crews from the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) to immediately remove large branches near the power lines. Additional work will be required for the complete removal of the tree following the HECO work.

The small urban park will be closed for the entirety of the removal process. The location of the tree, near a residential lane off Kunawai Lane, will require periodic closure of the lane for the staging of heavy equipment. We are working with area residents to minimize the impact of the emergency tree removal process.
