Oahu parks to reopen Saturday for exercise activities
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today that City parks will be reopening for designated exercise activities beginning Saturday, April 25.
These designated exercise activities only include: walking, jogging, running, and bicycle riding. The public may still traverse City parks to access the ocean, an open bathroom facility, or a designated Community Garden plot.
In addition, City park parking lots will reopen on that same date to accommodate park users engaging in only the above-mentioned activities. The parking lot at ‘Āina Moana (Magic Island) remains closed for a reconstruction project.
“While the public can begin returning to our parks Saturday as part of the gradual Coronavirus recovery, we want everyone to remember at this time that they are not allowed to remain idle or gather in the parks,” said Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation Director Michele Nekota. “Instead, they should conduct their essential exercise by walking, jogging, running, or riding a bicycle, then leave the park.”
The five Honolulu Botanical Gardens are scheduled to reopen for passive use on Friday, May 1. This means no camping, garden tours, or recreational programs will be offered at that time.
Other park facilities remain closed to the public, such as: playgrounds, off-leash dog parks, campgrounds, play courts (volleyball, basketball, tennis, pickleball), gyms, pools, all fields, skateparks, and recreation buildings. Sporting activities are not allowed.
The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and Koko Head Shooting Complex also continue to remain closed. Mahalo and stay healthy.
Botanical Park will open on May 1.
