Two new Honolulu Police Commissioners confirmed

The City Council recently confirmed Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s nominations of Michael Broderick and Doug Chin as Honolulu Police Commissioners to serve on the Commission.

Broderick and Chin will fill the positions previously held by Steven Levinson and Loretta Sheehan.

“I’d like to congratulate Michael Broderick and Doug Chin on their confirmations to the Honolulu Police Commission”, said Mayor Caldwell. “Their resumes reflect a lifetime of contributions to public service. They both have experience running very large organizations and will be able to bring those perspectives to their positions on the Commission. Both will bring strong counsel to Chief Ballard as she deals with the problems and opportunities in law enforcement facing our island and the Honolulu Police Department going forward.”

Michael Broderick currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Honolulu, managing over 1400 employees and a $30 million budget. He previously served as a trial judge in Honolulu’s unified Family Court, hearing over 10,000 cases of every type involving families and children.

Doug Chin has held many roles in City and State government over the course of his career, including serving briefly as the Acting Prosecuting Attorney in 2010, and as the City’s Managing Director from 2010 to 2013. He has also served as the Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Hawai‘i. He currently serves as a director at the law firm of Starn O’Toole Marcus & Fisher.

The police commission has a number of important duties, including (but not limited to) appointing or removing the Chief of Police, reviewing the rules and regulations for the administration of the Honolulu Police Department, and reviewing the annual budget prepared by the Chief of Police.
