Helicopter Crash in Nuuanu
A helicopter crashed in Nuuanu on the island of Oahu today, October 27, 2020, after experiencing engine failure, making a hard landing.
According to the FAA, the pilot reported the engine failure at around noon. The Hughes 369D, tail number N58251, was performing utility work in the area.
Hawaiian Electric stated that the helicopter was transporting utility materials near the Nuuanu Reservoir off Pali Highway when the engine failed. HECO workers on the ground were safely distanced when the chopper came down.
At the time, only the pilot was on board although previously he had been transporting workers.
Shayne Enright of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said that the pilot was in good shape and did not even have any major cuts or bruises. He was airlifted from the location.
Enright said, “The call came in as downed aircraft, and the last time there was a call for a downed aircraft in this area there were multiple fatalities, so your heart starts racing.” Immediately EMS, Fire, and Police responded.
