Honolulu Liquor Investigators shut down another establishment for 24 hours

The Honolulu Liquor commission has once again had to exercise its power under the Mayor’s emergency order, by shutting down Tapas Waikiki for 24 hours, after multiple violations were observed overnight.

At about 11 a.m. on July 18, investigators from the Honolulu Liquor Commission received a complaint via the 24 hour complaint line that Tapas Waikiki, located at 407 Seaside Avenue, was not observing social distancing rules.

Upon arrival, Investigators saw that the bar was very crowded, and there was absolutely no social distancing occurring. The majority of the patrons in the bar were not wearing any facial covering. Investigators initially estimated that there were over 100 customers within the licensed premises.

Due to the large amount of people drinking at this location, The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) was contacted for assistance to close the premises. While closing the establishment, HPD counted approximately 120 customers that exited this small establishment. While maximum capacity placards were not seen on the premises, the owner stated verbally the maximum capacity was 75.

“I wish all liquor establishments would follow Honolulu Emergency Orders, instead of a few jeopardizing everyone else’s operations,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “It is in everyone’s best interest to reduce the spread of this virus. While businesses are suffering right now, many will not survive another shutdown. Responsible behavior will allow businesses to remain open, and will keep their patrons safe.”

Tapas was subsequently cited by the Honolulu Liquor Commission for a violation of 281-38, Condition of License.
