Waialua Beach Road Still Ongoing

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC), announces that construction and repair on Bridge 605, Waialua Beach Road Ki‘iki‘i Stream Crossing is progressing well and is anticipated to be completed on schedule and reopened to the public in the next few weeks, weather and conditions permitting.

Extensive construction work on the bridge’s west abutment has been completed and work has begun to correct the severe scour discovered after the heavy rainfall in early March 2021. Rip rap will be installed to protect against future scour and will extend the life of the bridge. The rip-rap work will consist of installing heavy rock to the base of the support piers as well as the west abutment. Rock size varies from 22” in diameter to up to 34” in diameter with an average weight of 1,200 lbs.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the work is expected to be completed in the next few weeks with the bridge reopening shortly after demobilization by the contractor. Establishing ground cover and landscaping maintenance will commence after construction work is completed and after the bridge is reopened.

While the bridge will become safe to traverse, it will likely be reopened with a maximum allowable load limit. The load capacity limit is to be determined. The bridge has been subject to extensive damage in its 69 years of use and will require replacement in the next five to seven years. The City will be planning to design and construct a new bridge in that time that includes a temporary bypass during construction in order to minimize disruption to the public.

Construction continues seven days a week including holidays. Access to the bridge is strictly prohibited and traveling inside the security fence is trespassing onto an active construction site. Divers are in the water daily, but may not be visible from above. The City reminds the community the bridge remains closed and putting anything in the water near the bridge or the surrounding area is also strictly prohibited. Safety of the divers is of utmost importance and any unsafe conditions may delay completion of construction.

All travelers must follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signals and signage in the surrounding areas and detour route. Please travel with extreme caution and aloha.

The City would like to thank the community for their continued patience and cooperation during this expedited construction. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
